How to Travel With Mounjaro: Storage, Flights and Packing Guide

3 min read

Traveling with Mounjaro does not have to mean spending an entire trip searching for a refrigerator.

The most important step is understanding the current storage instructions for the exact Mounjaro product you carry and planning around those limits.

Current U.S. Eli Lilly prescribing information says Mounjaro single-dose pens and single-dose vials should normally be stored refrigerated at 36°F to 46°F.

If needed, each can be stored unrefrigerated at temperatures up to 86°F for as long as 21 days.

Mounjaro should not be frozen and should be kept in its original carton to protect it from light.

Does Mounjaro Need to Stay Refrigerated While Traveling?

Not necessarily for every trip.

The current U.S. label provides a room temperature allowance of up to 21 days at no more than 86°F for single-dose pens and vials.

That can make a short trip easier, but it does not mean temperature no longer matters. A hot car, direct sun, a beach bag or luggage left outdoors can exceed the labeled maximum.

If you need to preserve refrigerated storage for a longer trip, use a suitable medication storage method and follow the manufacturer’s directions.

Can Mounjaro Freeze?

Mounjaro should not be frozen. Eli Lilly states that Mounjaro should not be used if it has frozen.

This is why placing a pen directly against ice or a frozen gel pack can create a different problem while trying to keep it cool.

Cooling and freezing are not the same thing. Any travel cooler should be used in a way that respects the medication’s labeled temperature limits.

Flying With Mounjaro

Keep Mounjaro in your carry-on rather than relying on checked luggage. Checked bags can be delayed, lost or exposed to uncontrolled temperatures.

TSA permits medically necessary medications and related supplies through security. Cooling accessories used for medically necessary items can also be screened.

Tell the TSA officer about medically necessary liquids and supplies at the beginning of screening when applicable.

Keep the Medication in Its Original Carton

The original carton helps protect Mounjaro from light and makes the medication easier to identify.

Keep prescription information available, particularly for international travel.

Plan for the Entire Travel Day

Think beyond the flight itself. Transportation to the airport, security lines, delays, rental cars and the trip to your hotel can add hours to your day.

Mounjaro in Hotels and Rental Cars

Never treat a parked car as medication storage.

If your trip requires refrigeration, confirm hotel refrigerator availability before arrival. Avoid placing medication against a freezer compartment or an extremely cold refrigerator surface.

If you are using the room temperature allowance, track when the medication was removed from refrigeration and keep it below the labeled maximum temperature.

When a Medication Travel Cooler Can Help

Portable cooling can be useful when a trip is long, the weather is hot or you need to maintain refrigerated storage.

The Pen Chiller is a compact portable option designed for insulin pens and other appropriately sized medications in pen form.

Always confirm that your specific medication fits the product and follow both The Insulin Chiller instructions and the medication manufacturer’s current storage directions.
