How to Travel With Zepbound: Storage, Flights and Packing Guide

Traveling with Zepbound becomes much easier when you know the medication’s current storage limits before leaving home.

A short trip may not require continuous refrigeration, but heat, freezing and light still matter.

The Pen Chiller

Current U.S. Eli Lilly prescribing information says Zepbound should normally be refrigerated between 36°F and 46°F. If needed, a single-dose pen or vial can be stored unrefrigerated at temperatures no higher than 86°F for up to 21 days.

The current U.S. label also says that once Zepbound is stored at room temperature, it should not be returned to the refrigerator and should be discarded if not used within 21 days.

Does Zepbound Need Refrigeration During a Trip?

It depends on the length and conditions of the trip.

The 21 day room temperature allowance can cover many vacations, but the medication still must remain at or below 86°F.

Hot cars, direct sunlight and outdoor bags can exceed that limit. For longer travel or situations where you need to preserve refrigerated storage, plan an appropriate cooling method before departure.

Never Freeze Zepbound

Zepbound should not be frozen. Eli Lilly states that frozen Zepbound should not be used.

This is important when using ice or frozen gel packs because medication placed directly against a frozen surface may become too cold.

Keep the pen protected and use cooling products according to their instructions.

Flying With Zepbound

Medically necessary medications are allowed through TSA screening.

Keep Zepbound and essential supplies in your carry-on where they remain accessible and under your control.

At security, medically necessary liquids and cooling accessories may require additional screening. Review current TSA guidance before flying and tell the officer about medically necessary items when appropriate.

Keep the Original Carton

Eli Lilly directs users to store Zepbound in the original carton to protect it from light. The carton also makes the medication easier to identify during travel.

Account for Delays

Your temperature plan should cover more than scheduled flight time.

Airport traffic, security, delays, connections and ground transportation can make a travel day much longer than expected.

Zepbound at a Hotel

If you are maintaining refrigerated storage, confirm the hotel has a suitable refrigerator.

Be cautious around freezer compartments and very cold surfaces because Zepbound must not freeze.

If you have chosen to use the U.S. room temperature allowance, remember that the current label says not to return the medication to the refrigerator after it has been stored at room temperature. Track the date it was removed from refrigeration.

Using a Portable Medication Cooler

A portable medication cooler can help protect temperature sensitive medication during long travel days or hot conditions.

The Pen Chiller from The Insulin Chiller is a compact option designed for injection pens and other appropriately sized medications in pen form.

Confirm fit before travel and follow both the cooler instructions and Zepbound’s current prescribing information.
